How do I become a member?
Membership in the Geist Chapter Is very selective, limited to rising seniors, based on academic scholarship and activities of leadership and service. All rising seniors with a 3.0 or higher GPA are considered and the members of the Geist Chapter of Mortar Board then nominate those students who they believe possess the qualities of scholarship, leadership and service. The nominees are debated and discussed until the new Mortar Board class is selected.
Why Join?
Mortar Board is an accredited member of the Association of College Honor Societies, and is one of the oldest honor societies in the country, with a rich tradition of excellence on more than 200 campuses throughout the country. Members of Mortar Board are given exclusive benefits, including networking tools and opportunities as well as access to occupational and scholarship search engines, the unique chance to govern a national organization and much more.
How Big is Mortar Board?
The Longwood Chapter has 33 members. Most individual chapters of Mortar Board range from 15 to 75 members each on college campuses in every state except Alaska, Maine and Nevada. The founding chapters are The Ohio State University, the University of Michigan, Cornell University and Swarthmore College. Since Mortar Board’s 1918 inception, nearly a quarter of a million members have been initiated at more than 200 chapters, and are living all over the world!

Mortar Board is built on its rich history and campus traditions. We maintain the standards of our organization by perpetuating those traditions. Students selected for membership in Mortar Board understand that it is not only an honor but a commitment.
